You can access a range of support services on MyWi, our student intranet, to help you during your time at Writtle College.
This includes safeguarding and wellbeing services where you can book appointments and find useful information, as well as tools for reporting absences, getting IT advice, and resetting your password.
You'll also find important details such as term dates, careers advice and support for college students, and guidance on fees and funding.
If you're studying a university degree in Writtle you can access MyARU, our intranet for higher education students.
While teaching and drop-in computing facilities, as well as short-term loan devices, are available on campus we encourage you to bring an appropriate laptop to support your studies at Writtle College.
There are several points you can consider to make sure you have a suitable device, and can use any software that we provide as part of your course.
Microsoft Windows or Mac?
It's your personal choice, but we suggest using a Microsoft Windows-based laptop as a best fit. You will be able to work with other types of computer, but we can’t guarantee their compatibility with our chosen applications and other software.
Always choose the current version of Microsoft Windows and keep it up to date to ensure that your studies are safe and secure. You should install a good-quality antivirus product as well.
Microsoft Windows 11 is the most recent version available. It can run in ‘S’ (secure) mode, which only allows approved applications to be installed from the Microsoft Online Store. While this is the safest way to work, you may need to turn off ‘S’ mode to add course-specific software. This is a permanent change and, once made, cannot be reversed.
What about Windows 10?
Microsoft is phasing out Windows 10 and will cease support in Autumn 2025. We encourage you to upgrade as soon as you can.
The level of specification is largely down to cost. Generally, the higher the specification, the longer the usable life of the computer. The following is a good minimum specification:
